Generator Sizing
What Size Do You Need?
Size is determined by your electrical load — primarily your AC system(s). We run a load calculation on every project before recommending a unit size.
11–13 kW
Essential circuits
AC (1 unit), refrigerator, lights, and selected outlets. Appropriate for smaller homes or budget-focused installations.
16–20 kW
Most of the home
AC (1–2 units), all major appliances, lighting throughout. Most popular size range for South Florida single-family homes.
22–26 kW
Whole home with larger loads
Multiple AC units, well pumps, all appliances, EV charging. Appropriate for larger homes or homes with high electrical load.
30+ kW
Large homes, full commercial-grade power
Ensures no load-shedding even at peak usage. For homes over 3,500 sq ft with multiple HVAC zones.
Install Before You Need It
The Worst Time to Order a Generator Is After a Hurricane Warning
Generator demand spikes the moment a storm is named and tracks toward South Florida. Lead times for equipment go from 2–4 weeks to 8–16 weeks. Installers are booked out months ahead.
The right time to install is hurricane season prep — February through May, before the season opens June 1. Permits process faster, equipment is available, and installation crews are schedulable. We tell everyone the same thing: install in the off-season, not in a panic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to install a generator in Miami-Dade?
Yes. Standby generator installation requires both a building permit and an electrical permit in all three counties. The installation also requires coordination with FPL for the transfer switch connection and, if a new gas line is needed, a gas permit. We handle all permits. Any contractor who offers to install a generator without permits is creating a liability for you — insurance companies routinely deny storm-damage claims on unpermitted electrical equipment.
What size generator do I need for my house in South Florida?
Size depends on your electrical load — primarily your AC system(s), which are by far the largest draw in South Florida. A single 3-ton AC unit draws 3,500–5,000 watts at startup. Add your refrigerator, lights, outlets, and any other loads. Most South Florida homes with a single AC unit are well-served by a 16–20 kW unit. Homes with multiple AC units or large electrical loads should calculate carefully. We do a load calculation as part of every generator assessment.
What fuel type is best for a standby generator in South Florida?
Natural gas or liquid propane. Natural gas connects directly to your utility supply — no fuel storage, no refilling, essentially unlimited runtime as long as the gas supply is intact. Liquid propane requires tank installation on-site — more setup, but available in areas without natural gas infrastructure. Diesel generators are powerful but require significant fuel storage and have more maintenance requirements. Most South Florida residential installations use natural gas.
How does a standby generator work during a hurricane?
A standby generator connects to your home's electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When grid power fails, the ATS detects the outage and signals the generator to start — typically within 10–30 seconds. The generator automatically provides power to your home until grid power is restored, then the ATS switches back and the generator shuts down. No manual action required.
How much does a whole-house generator cost in Miami?
Cost depends on generator size, fuel type, whether a new gas line is needed, and the complexity of the electrical connection. We provide a free written estimate after assessing your home's electrical load and fuel access. Call (786) 983-7928 to schedule.
What brands of generators do you install?
We install Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and Cummins standby generators. Brand selection depends on availability, your budget, and the specific generator size required. We'll recommend the appropriate model for your application — not the one with the best margin for us.
Can I install a generator if I don't have natural gas service?
Yes — liquid propane (LP) generators work the same way as natural gas units, with a propane tank installed on your property. Tank sizing depends on your expected usage. Propane delivery is handled by a fuel supplier. In areas without FPL natural gas infrastructure — which includes parts of Miami-Dade and much of Palm Beach County — LP is the standard residential choice.
